Japan’s Autumn Samurai Festivals
Although there is no specific day to celebrate the role of the samurai in Japan’s history and culture, there are many Autumn festivals which honour the samurai tradition. Our selection will help you deepen your knowledge of Japanese culture and perhaps inspire a visit to one of these amazing events!
Samurai events in Japan this October
Takigi Noh at Shimbara Castle, Nagasaki Prefecture
Taking place in early October, this festival includes a parade of warriors around the castle grounds and performances of traditional Noh theatre by firelight. As drums are played, Shimbara Castle is bathed in ethereal blue light and bonfires line the route of the performers. Find this year’s schedule here.
Sekigahara Battlefield Festival, Gifu Prefecture
This event marks the historic Sekigahara battle of 1600, which led to great changes in Japanese society. Each October, over 100 armored warriors from across Japan come together to perform a spectacular reenactment of the Battle of Sekigahara in three parts. Details of the festival can be found here.
Winter Siege Festival, Osaka Castle
Events take place during October and November to remember the Siege of Osaka (1614 - 1615). As well as lectures, music and exhibitions, there is an exciting samurai reenactment which attracts visitors from around the country. Read more on the Osaka Castle website.
Katsuren Castle Festival, Uruma, Okinawa Prefecture
This celebration in late October features performances and parades inspired by medieval Ryukyuan warriors. Events take place near the Katsuren Castle Ruins, which are one of Okinawa's UNESCO listed sites. Details are usually listed on the Uruma city website.
Gifu Nobunaga Festival, Gifu City
You’ll have to wait till the beginning of November to enjoy the mounted samurai parade, memorial services at Sōfukuji Temple, children’s samurai experience and plenty of other activities included in Gifu City’s Nobunaga Festival.
