PATTERN DICTIONARY - SEIGAIHA
SEIGAIHA
Seigaiha (青海波) is a traditional Japanese pattern depicting waves with repeated triple semicircles, known as Kissho Monyo for its auspicious symbolism.
This pattern symbolises endless gentle waves, embodying the wish for a peaceful and eternal life. Seigaiha is a motif found not only in Japan but also in various countries worldwide.
It is believed to have originated in ancient Persia and was introduced to Japan between 600-700 AD, becoming associated with water depictions around 1300 AD.
The name 'Seigaiha' translates to 'blue ocean waves' and is derived from its use in the traditional Japanese gagaku dance piece of the same name, where it adorned costumes.
