A Japan Holiday in 2024 to Gion Matsuri 祇園祭 : our one week holiday packing list

A holiday to Japan in July 2024 should include a trip to Kyoto for the amazing Gion Matsuri festival. Running throughout July, the festival is a fantastic celebration of Kyoto's rich cultural heritage. The crowds and humid summer heat make it important to dress lightly, wear comfortable shoes and carry a bottle of water. At Velarof we believe comfort starts with the base layer, so don’t forget to pack your favourite underwear!

Destination Kyoto for the Gion Matsuri Festival 2024

Kyoto in July is an exciting holiday destination. Gion Matsuri centres around the famous Yasaka Shrine and is considered one of Japan's three great festivals. First held during the 9th century Heian period, it is known for its vibrant processions of ‘yamaboko’ floats, traditional music, dance performances and sacred ceremonies. Highlights include the Kane bells played by Hayashi performers, the ‘Saki-matsuri’ and ‘Ato-matsuri’, both featuring Yamaboko-junkō parades of enormous, colourful floats.

How to pack for a holiday

Plan ahead to avoid overpacking for your trip to the Gion Matsuri in Kyoto. Rolling clothes instead of folding them can save space in your suitcase. Choose versatile pieces to mix and match, creating different outfits for daytime and evening wear. Considering the summer heat, pack lightweight clothing and add layers during cooler evenings. It also helps to stick to a simple colour palette that coordinates well together. Wrinkle-resistant fabrics with moisture-wicking and quick-drying properties are ideal. Pack your underwear from Velarof, perfect for travel, designed for all day comfort no matter what adventures the day holds.
