PATTERN DICTIONARY - SHIMA
SHIMA
Stripes are a pattern seen all over the world. In Japan, this traditional pattern is known as Shima (縞).
About 400 years ago, Shima became popular among the townspeople of Edo (now Tokyo) as everyday cotton clothing, and it soon gained popularity among a wide range of people, from samurai to farmers.
The Shima pattern is particularly associated with the spirit of 'iki,' which signifies stylishness. In Edo aesthetics, iki implies being smart and sexy.
During the stripe boom, a slender silhouette was considered beautiful, epitomising the iki style of the time.
Vertical stripes, which enhanced the body's lines, were especially well-received.
