PATTERN DICTIONARY - SASARINDO
SASARINDO
Sasarindo (笹竜胆) is a family crest depicting three flowers above five leaves spreading downward. It is notably associated with Minamoto no Yoshitsune, a revered Japanese hero from around 850 years ago.
The motif of the crest is the wild gentian (rindo), and the name Sasarindo derives from the resemblance of the leaves to bamboo grass (sasa).
Rindo is a native plant found throughout Japan, blooming bell-shaped flowers in shades of blue, light blue, and purple during autumn. It is a familiar botanical feature in Japanese classical literature.
While Sasarindo is widely recognised as Yoshitsune's crest, historical records do not confirm his personal use of it. Instead, it was originally associated with the nobleman Murakami Genji. Over time, through the depiction of Yoshitsune in Kabuki plays and other cultural works, Sasarindo has become popularly associated with him and adopted as a crest by many samurai.
Sasarindo symbolises Yoshitsune's attributes of bravery, audacity, quick wit, and military genius."
