KIKU-SEIGAIHA
Kiku-seigaiha (菊青海波) combines chrysanthemum flowers (菊 Kiku), symbolising immortality and longevity, arranged in the Seigaiha (青海波) pattern resembling blue ocean waves. This design signifies the continuity of peace, akin to the perpetual gentle waves.
Chrysanthemums hold meanings of 'nobility,' 'longevity,' 'protection from evil spirits,' and 'mental and physical stability.' In Japan, they are used during New Year's celebrations and to mark children's growth, believed to foster virtuous development and bring good fortune.
Chrysanthemums have been cherished in Japan for centuries and, alongside cherry blossoms, are national flowers. Introduced from China about 1,200 years ago, chrysanthemums are revered for their longevity symbolism and medicinal properties, historically used by nobility as herbs.
For approximately 400 years, chrysanthemum motifs have been integral to various Japanese designs, including traditional performing arts costumes.
The Kiku flower design is also emblematic of the Japanese imperial family, renowned for its elegance and steadfastness.
