PATTERN DICTIONARY - KIKKO

KIKKO

Kikko (亀甲) is a traditional Japanese good fortune pattern, known as Kissho Monyo, arranged in regular hexagons.

The name 'Kikko' refers to the shell of a turtle, which has long been considered auspicious in Japan, symbolising longevity and health due to turtles' slow growth and long lifespans.
In ancient times, turtle shells were also used for fortune-telling and were regarded as sacred.

The turtle shell pattern was introduced to Japan from China around 1,300 years ago. Historically, only the nobility in Japan were permitted to use this motif, which was considered so sacred that ordinary people could not even view it.

Over time, the turtle shell pattern became widely used in textiles and furnishings, appearing on luxurious items such as kimonos, obi belts, pottery, and gold leaf. Around 1300 AD, the pattern began to be used by samurai and gradually became visible to the general public.

The regular hexagon, also seen in nature as a beehive structure, is considered one of the most stable shapes. This honeycomb structure is even used in modern architecture for its strength and sturdiness. Hence, the Kikko pattern also conveys the meaning of being 'strong and sturdy.'
