PATTERN DICTIONARY - ICHIMATSU
ICHIMATSU
Ichimatsu (市松) is a traditional Japanese pattern consisting of alternating squares in two colours.
This pattern gained fame approximately 260 years ago when a kabuki actor named Sanogawa Ichimatsu wore hakama trousers adorned with it during a performance, captivating local audiences.
Since then, it has been known as the 'ichimatsu pattern,' named after the actor. Interestingly, it is believed that the 'Damier' pattern used in the design of Louis Vuitton bags draws inspiration from the ichimatsu pattern.
