How to get fit and healthy in 2025

The annual ritual of making new year’s resolutions can fill us with a sense of dread. We may know the changes we need to make to improve our health and fitness, but sustaining them is no easy task.

Can those 2025 New Year’s resolutions be kept?

Start by making the right resolutions! The best New Year resolutions are genuinely achievable and meaningful to you. Only you know what is right for you, so it’s important to be honest with yourself. Choose resolutions that align with your personal values and long-term goals, rather than something someone else wants you to do.

Set goals that you can actually accomplish given your lifestyle and commitments. It helps to be specific. For example, “swim for 30 minutes twice a week” is more motivating than “exercise more”.  But it’s also essential to be flexible. It's better to adapt your goals rather than give them up completely.

To get fit and healthy in 2025, set at least one target in each of these areas.

  1. Activity
Choose an activity or exercise that you enjoy doing. Would you prefer a team sport like football, an exercise class, or an activity you can do on your own like running or swimming? Be realistic about how much time you have each week and the commitment you can make.

  2. Nutrition
Healthy eating does not have to mean a restrictive diet. Focus on reducing the ultra processed foods you eat and maintaining a sensible calorie intake. Many of us should also increase fibre, fruit and vegetables in our diet.

  3. Sleep
As well as making us irritable and less productive, being tired makes us hungry and lacking the energy to exercise. A good sleep routine can really help you keep your resolutions on track.

Stay fit and healthy

To stay fit and healthy, develop good habits. Build exercise into your routine so that you don’t have to keep finding the time or motivating yourself to get active. Consistency will help because over time the decision to exercise will become automatic. The same principle applies to improving your nutrition and sleep schedule. The occasional variation or treat is fine, as long as you don’t lose sight of your goal and you get back on track. 2025 really can be a healthier one for you!
