PATTERN DICTIONARY - UROKO

UROKO

Uroko (鱗) is a pattern of equilateral or isosceles triangles arranged in succession and is one of the traditional Japanese good fortune patterns known as Kissho Monyo.

The term 'Uroko' means fish scales. When triangles are arranged in four directions, their vertices touch, creating new triangles between them, resembling fish scales. Fish scales symbolise youth and rebirth, as new scales grow beneath the old ones.

Additionally, scales protect the body, so the Uroko pattern has been used as a talisman to ward off evil spirits.

The Uroko pattern has a long history, appearing in various cultures worldwide since ancient times. In Japan, it was seen on ancient tools and murals about 2,000 years ago and began to be used in fashion design around 600 years ago.
